2018 marks 25 years of Chandlers Building Supplies Limited. To celebrate this milestone, we are setting ourselves some personal challenges throughout the year and fundraising for the Construction Industry Helpline as well as other local charities. We are also making a number of donations to charities and good causes to show our support for the local communities in we trade in.
We are going to keep this page updated with the events we are taking part in and the donations we make, so please support us by checking in on us throughout the year!
The first event up this year, was The Grand Brighton Half Marathon at the end of February. Amazingly, we managed to recruit 25 of us to take part in the event, from seasoned runners to those who wouldn't even run for a bus - the group were the true definition of mixed ability!
For this event, we were fundraising for Brighton & Hove Crossroads Care and La Leche League GB Breastfeeding Helpline. Finishing times ranged from 1 hour 34 minutes to 5 hours. We did say we were a mixed ability group!
The VADO Rally 2018 took place between the 7th and 10th June. Competing to raise money for the Rainy Day Trust and Variety charities, teams rallied through some of Europe's greatest cities and scenery in a car worth no more than £500.
In the Pavestone Rally 2017, the Chandlers team took second place, narrowly beating the Cembrit team into third. This year we are joining forces and aim to be in the running for best dressed car, best dressed team, best fundraising and, of course, overall winners! Find out more and make a donation here. You can follow the adventures of our team on Facebook.
We held a golf day on Thursday June 14th at Mid Sussex Golf Club to celebrate our 25 year anniversary and to raise funds for the Construction Industry Helpline. Entry fees for the day included bacon rolls & coffee, 18 holes of golf and a demonstration by the world champion trick shot finishing with a carvery lunch. All the while, raising money for the Construction Industry Helpline! The total raised came to £2,000 which will help the charity support construction workers in need.
On July 4th, we held a grand re-opening at our Brighton branch to celebrate its refurbishment and its successful recovery from the devastating fire that burned for 4 days at a warehouse in the branch. With a selfie booth, celebrity look-a-likes, giveways and product demonstrations on the day, we were also raising money for Off The Fence, a local charity which works to support people facing homelessness. Off The Fence joined us on the day to raise awareness of the work they carry out in the city.
We were delighted to reach a donation of £500 for Off The Fence. You can read more about the event here.
On 18th August, a group of us cycled from our Petworth branch to our Ringmer branch, a journey of approximately 42 miles. Taking a scenic route through the beautiful Sussex countryside, the journey took around 5-6 hours.
Jason is our Petworth Branch Manager, pictured across. Last year, Jason suffered a heart attack and his recovery has been life-changing for him. In his own words, Jason talks about the challenge planned for August 2018:
"In late August 2017, my life changed forever. I had a heart attack and bypass surgery. At the age of 53, it felt like it was all over really and I was never again going to be able to climb that metaphorical mountain. Well I was wrong… I soon appreciated, with complete clarity, that it's down to me and if I got through this (also along with the aid of a great surgical team), then I was going to make sure that I did all I could to make a difference to my future.
Every day we hear the hollowness of words spoken, along with realisation of how cheaply we can often use them to express what we are going to do or see. This is my journey – that is the challenge and this is me doing it."
The event raised money for the Construction Industry Helpline, you can see our just giving page here.
We are proud to be partnering with the Rainy Day Trust again this year.
The Rainy Day Trust supports all those who have worked in the home improvement and enhancement industry, with aim of helping these people to have the funds they need to live.
The Rainy Day Trust provides support in a variety of ways including; grants & financial support, fuel poverty help and telephone counselling. Find out more about the work they do here.
In February, we made a donation to the 'Cuts 4 Kenya', a fundraising project created to make the 'Dream Room' possible. The 'Dream Room' is located in Kisumu Children's Remand Home, located in Kisumu, Western Kenya.
It is a project that will transform a disused classroom from an empty shell to a welcoming, fun place. It will be resourced into a library with wall murals, furniture, and arts and crafts. You can find out more about the project here.
In May, we donated compost to Pippa's Group Nursery for their 'growing veggies' project, helping the children of the nursery to learn about where food comes from.
Based in Lewes, Pippa's Group Nursery have just moved to a bigger site on Landport Road. More space means more room for growing vegetables!
In July, David Gunn, a customer of ours, will be cycling the entire route of the 2018 Tour de France to raise money for the William Wates Memorial Trust. The event known as "Le Loop", will follow the same 3336km route that the Tour de France sets out.
The William Wates Memorial Trust supports projects that encourage young people experiencing severe disadvantages to keep away from anti-social behaviour and criminal activity, enabling them to fulfil their potential.
As a self-funded event for a worthy cause, we were only too happy to contribute towards David's incredible effort for the charity by sponsoring the cycle jersey. You can read more about David's challenge or make a donation here.
We are proud to be sponsoring another season for Ringmer Bowls Club. Based just down the road from our Ringmer branch and Head Office, one of our HGV Drivers is a member of the Bowls Club. Best of luck for the season ahead!
LagoonFest took place on 8th September in Hove Lagoon, next door to our Brighton branch.
