Let your builders merchant help with a tool kit
When it comes to doing it yourself, a trip to your local builders merchant can help you get everything you need for the perfect home DIY kit. Whether you are a beginner or have quite a lot of experience, a well-equipped toolbox is great for doing all those little jobs around the home.
Our handy guide will help you be prepared to take on DIY jobs and make some emergency repairs.
What tools are needed?
To complete DIY projects to a high standard, a builders merchant would recommend that you include the following tools in your kit:
- 5m tape measure
- Set of screwdrivers with varying heads
- Electric screwdriver and bits
- Stanley knife
- Spirit level
- Small adjustable spanner
These tools will help you complete projects, such as putting up shelves, hanging a picture and putting together flat packed furniture. Your local builders merchant will also be able to give you advice on the right tools to include.
As you start to get more confident and take on more projects, more sophisticated tools can be added to your kit.
Your local builders merchant can help with decorating too
When doing some home decorating, there are a number of items that your home kit should also include:
Paintbrushes – Good quality brushes are a must, as cheaper alternatives will tend to leave bristles in the paintwork. Invest in a selection of sizes so that you have a brush to suit every area. We would suggest a 1 inch brush, 1.5 inch brush, 2 inch brush, 2.5 inch brush and a 3 inch brush.
Masking tape – To ensure that you get a professional finish when painting a room, masking tape is essential, as this will protect other paintwork and give you a nice straight edge.
Roller tray and roller heads – Using rollers to paint a wall cuts down on time, and will give an even finish. Keep a few spare heads in your kit.
What about in an emergency?
You never know when an emergency might strike, so it is good to have a few essential items so you are prepared. If you do have a home emergency and are unsure of how to fix it yourself, speak to your local builders merchant for advice as they will be able to help you with the building supplies.
Basic equipment to add to your kit is:
- Selection of fuses (3amp, 5amp, 13amp)
- Radiator bleed key
- Insulation tape
Your builders merchant will also be able to recommend a professional if the job is just a little bit too advanced to take on yourself.
A few little extras
Whilst not essential there are some other items available at your builders merchant that can enhance your tool kit, such as:
- Trestle table
- Electric drill
- Selection of screws
