Follow our handy guide and be prepared for emergency repairs or small DIY jobs.

What essential building supplies should I have at home?

Of course this is determined by your competence level and the type of DIY project you want to take on, but there are a few basic inexpensive building supplies that you will probably end up buying for many projects, so it is handy to have a stock of them at home.  These include:
•    Screws in various sizes
•    Wall plugs
•    Nails
•    Wood glue
•    Silicone caulk
•    Selection of fuses (3amp, 5amp, 13amp)
•    Masking tape

There will, of course, be specific items that you will need to purchase depending on the job you are undertaking, but the above will help you with essential repairs.

And what about tools?

There's no point having a stock of building supplies without also having the right tools for the job.  In a home tool kit, we would recommend including the following:

•    Hammer
•    5m tape measure
•    Set of screwdrivers with varying heads
•    Electric screwdriver and bits
•    Hacksaw
•    Saw
•    Stanley knife
•    Spirit level
•    Small adjustable spanner
•    Pliers

These will all help you complete basic DIY projects such as putting together flat pack furniture, hanging a door or putting up shelves.

Additionally, for decorating projects it is a good idea to also include good quality paint brushes in varying sizes, roller tray and roller head, and masking tape.

Are there any extras that I should consider?

There are some building supplies and tools that are good to have should an emergency strike, such as:
•    Torch
•    Radiator bleed key
•    Insulation tape
•    Bucket
•    Trestle table

Whilst these will help with basic emergencies like a power outage, blown fuse or leak, if you have an emergency that you are unsure of how to repair, we would always recommend calling in an expert.
