Tips on adding a second bathroom suite

Keeping in line with modern family life, the way that we use our homes has changed dramatically over the last 30 years or so. What was practical decades ago is not so much now and high on the list of many families' requirements is the addition of a second bathroom suite.

Additionally, adding a second bathroom suite could also increase your home's value, as bathrooms and kitchens are key when it comes to selling properties.

Adding an ensuite

Instead of being considered the luxury that they once were, ensuite bathroom suites are considered the norm and are certainly beneficial when a family are all trying to use the bathroom at once in the morning.

Before you decide upon losing a bedroom to make way for an ensuite bathroom, consider whether you are able lose a part of the master bedroom instead, as ensuite bathrooms do not need to be big rooms. The space for a general bathroom suite is generally around two metres by two metres, and a shower room as little as one and a half metres squared.

For example, consider a hotel room: the bathroom is very often carved into the corner of the room, so take this idea and use it in your own home.

Small bathroom suites

Remember you are adding a second bathroom suite for practicality and not necessarily luxury, so having a small space is not a problem. If this is the case, then it is probably best to forget about the bath and just include a shower cubicle. Alternatively, you may want to consider a wet room, as these are extremely practical for small spaces.

There are now a number of products available on the market that you can use in your bathroom suite, which are specifically designed for smaller bathrooms. These include corner sinks and corner toilets, so take a look at these as they can help to make your small space feel bigger than it actually is.

No space to add a second bathroom suite

If you don't have the room to add a completely separate bathroom suite, then there are options to help make life a little easier.

Adding another sink to the bathroom can really be a time saver as it means that more people can use the bathroom at the same time. As the plumbing is already in place, it is also a relatively easy thing to do.

How about splitting your bathroom suite and making your toilet a separate room, or adding a stand alone shower? Both of these options will, again, allow more than one person to use the bathroom at a time.
