Sussex Downs students get a lesson in eco-friendly building
Students from Sussex Downs College recently took part in a workshop led by Chandlers about environmentally friendly building techniques, which included making a construction out of Porotherm blocks.
As opposed to traditional materials, Porotherm blocks are a highly sustainable building product that is both cost-effective and extremely time-efficient.
Bricklaying and Build Environment students took part in the workshop and began with a classroom session looking at Porotherm blocks and their many benefits, before getting involved with a hands-on demonstration. The practical training, held by Chandlers, will go towards the students' City & Guilds qualifications.
Phil Barnard, Technical Specification Manager at Chandlers, was delighted to lead the workshop, "Chandlers is a proud supporter of Sussex Downs College and we have worked with them on a number of student projects. With more and more environmentally friendly building products coming onto the market all the time, it is important to run sessions like this with students who will be coming into the industry, to make them aware of the materials of the future."
Kevin Diett, Curriculum Leader for Brickwork at Sussex Downs College, said, "The workshop was an excellent opportunity for the students to see and work with new products, as well as learning the technical information from industry experts helping to make them more employable. We would like to thank Chandlers for their continued support; it's a great demonstration of how colleges and suppliers can come together and work for the future of the industry."
